6 Tips to Ensure Your Heat Pump Is Running 100% Efficiently

Feb. 18, 2025

So, you've installed your heat pump and are on your way to enjoying lower energy bills and reduced carbon emissions. But how can you ensure you're getting the most out of this innovative technology?

To unlock the full energy-saving potential of your air-to-water or air-to-air heat pump, it must be operated efficiently. At Daikin, we help homeowners across Ireland optimize their heat pumps by sharing simple yet effective tips. Here's our guide to maximizing efficiency and avoiding common mistakes.

1. Avoid Adjusting Your Settings

Your heat pump installer has configured the settings for optimal efficiency in your home, so there's no need to make adjustments. If you feel something isn't quite right, take the following steps:

- Contact your local heat pump supplier or installer to ensure that any changes won't lead to higher electricity bills.

- Consult your authorized service engineer during your next scheduled maintenance visit for expert advice.

For temperature control, use the time clock to adjust timing and the thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) or thermostat to manage the ambient temperature. Keep in mind:

✔ The ideal living area temperature is 19–20°C.

✔ Bedrooms should be kept at 17–18°C.

✔ Lowering your thermostat by just 1°C can result in significant energy savings.

Most importantly, never turn off your heat pump, as doing so may lead to excessive electricity bills!

2. Never Block or Cover Your Heat Pump

Your air-to-water or air-to-air heat pump must always have unobstructed airflow to operate efficiently. Covering the unit or placing objects directly in front of it can:

- Reduce efficiency

- Increase running costs

- Shorten the system's lifespan

To ensure optimal performance:

✔ Maintain at least 1 meter of free space in front of the outdoor unit.

✔ Avoid building barriers or enclosures around the unit unless specifically approved by your heat pump manufacturer or supplier.

Keeping your heat pump clear and well-ventilated helps it run smoothly and efficiently for years to come.

3. Keep the Immersion and Backup Heater Switch On

Your heat pump's electrical immersion plays a crucial role in maintaining water hygiene by completing the anti-Legionella cycle, preventing the growth of harmful bacteria in your hot water system. Do not turn off the immersion to ensure your system remains safe and effective.

Additionally, some heat pumps rely on a backup heater to support start-up and operation. Frequently turning this on and off may lead to higher electricity bills.

For optimal efficiency and safety, always keep these features activated unless advised otherwise by your installer or service provider.

4. For Optimum Performance, Set Your Hot Water Temperature to 48°C

To get the most out of your heat pump system, your domestic hot water temperature should be set to 48°C. Once a week, your heat pump will increase the hot water temperature to 60-65°C to ‘burn away' the dangerous Legionella bacteria, ensuring a safe and clean supply of domestic hot water. After this, the hot water in your tank reverts to the standard set temperature.

5. Water Around the Base of Your Outdoor Unit? No Need to Worry

It's normal to see water pooling around the base of your outdoor unit. This happens because the refrigerant inside your heat pump is cold, causing moisture from the air to condense on the outdoor coil and drip down. While this may leave stains, it's not a leak.

In freezing weather, the unit may even ice over—again, this is perfectly normal. Your heat pump will automatically defrost itself, melting the ice and draining the water away, sometimes releasing steam or white mist in the process.

6. Follow Warranty Terms to Keep Coverage

Just like a gas boiler, your heat pump must be serviced at least once a year by a registered technician. Failure to do so can void your warranty.

To maintain coverage:

✔ Schedule an annual service with an authorized technician.

✔ Keep detailed records of all service and maintenance work.

Regular servicing not only protects your warranty but also ensures your heat pump remains efficient and reliable year after year.
